- The symposium was inaugurated by: H.H. Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, and Vice-President of the Higher Supreme Council of Education; and Mr. Kochiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director General.

- The Symposium series was launched in 2003 and promotes cutting-edge research in education. The overarching goal of the series is to create a forum for international scholars to explore the implications of their research for practical educational applications. Teachers from across the Arab region were given the chance to interact together with international experts and presenters.

- The second symposium in this groundbreaking series hosted by Qatar Foundation brought teachers from across the Arab world together with researchers, experts and activists from Europe, Australia, US, South America and Asia in a series of panels, debates, case studies, workshops and taskforces.

- The main objectives of the second symposium were twofold. The first was to explore initiatives concerning access to technology and democratic participation. The second was to consider the presentation of science and technological education in a manner that promotes democratic reasoning.
